May Charity of the Month: Stephen Center

The Stephen Center partners with the community, families and individuals to overcome homelessness, addiction and poverty. The Center has served homeless and low-income men, women and children in Omaha since 1984. The organization was founded by Sharon and Dick McNeil, who determined a distinct need to focus on those living in poverty in south Omaha. Stephen Center serves individuals and families through the four distinct programs below.

HERO Program: The HERO Program is a treatment program which provides substance abuse treatment for low-income and homeless individuals. Services are also provided for those who are dually diagnosed with both substance abuse and mental illness. Multiple levels of care include: inpatient services, outpatient services, intensive outpatient services, outpatient services (HERO) juvenile intensive outpatient services and substance abuse evaluations. The treatment center is capable of housing men and women.

Thrift Store: The Thrift Store provides jobs and job training to Stephen Center clients, plus vouchers for clients at no cost to shop for clothing and other items. All proceeds from sales to the community directly support the Center’s mission and programs. Open 7 days a week, at 5125 South 24th St. 402-614-1017.

Pettigrew Emergency Shelter: Pettigrew Emergency Shelter is the Stephen Center’s new emergency shelter which opened in January 2015. The Pettigrew Emergency Shelter provides emergency services for homeless single men and women as well as parents with children. Meals are available to residents three times per day, seven days per week. Stephen Center’s facilities are substance-free. Residents must be sober to enter.

Permanent Supportive Housing Apartments: Permanent Supportive Housing (PSH) are apartments that comply with HUD Housing Quality Standards. Single room occupancy plus one, two and three bedroom apartment rentals for individuals and families seeking to live in a supportive, sober-living community. Supportive services include case management and life skills education. Applicants must qualify at or below 50-60% of the area’s median income and provide verification of special needs status. Application fee and background check apply. The opportunity exists to live in a stable environment, increase life skills and income, and gain control over decisions that impact personal and familial needs.

All donations will go to the Stephen Center. 5217 South 28th Ave. Omaha, NE 68107. 402-715-5440. Or to volunteer, please go to http://www.stephencenter.org
