Scriptural nourishment is enhanced if parishioners make a regular practice of prayer and meditation on the readings in preparation for Mass.
The Catechism of the Catholic Church cites Luke 24:25 in connection with Scripture’s vital importance to the right understanding and worship of God through Scripture. Here, in his depiction of the Risen Jesus’ second appearance, Luke reports that the Risen Jesus joined his disciples in a village outside Jerusalem and there “opened their minds to understand the Scriptures.” One must also note that in Luke’s depiction of the first appearance of the Risen Jesus, the disciples only recognize their Lord “in the breaking of the bread” (Luke 24:35). Scripture and Eucharist thus join to disclose Jesus’ powerful presence among His people.
