Welcome!
St. Wenceslaus Parish
Omaha, NE
St. Wenceslaus parish was founded in 1877 by Fr. Vaclav Kocarnik. The
Sisters of Mercy opened a grade school in 1879. On July 3, 1887 a new
church was dedicated at 14th and Pine and two years later the school was
enlarged to a two-story building. St. Wenceslaus was a Cech National
parish. In the first 100 years of the parish there were only five
pastors: Frs. Vaclav Kocarnik, William Choka, John Vranek, Edward Chapuran
(native son of St. Wenceslaus), and Anthony Tuma.
Because of the
dwindling membership, in 1980 the parishioners voted to relocate the
parish. The present site was selected in 1981. Fr. James Cain was
appointed as pastor. Under his leadership the present facility was
constructed. Today there are about 2500 families as members of the
parish, over 840 students in its grade school, and over 700 students in is
Catechetics program.
We are a parish with deep roots in a rich past, growing in the present, with
a very hopeful future. We are a young parish that is stable and
established in the community. There are ministries and committees who
serve the community and provide members of the community an opportunity to
practice stewardship of their time, talent, and treasure. We invite you
to join us on our spiritual journey as the people of God.
